How Is Your Summer Strategy Working

How Is Your Summer Strategy Working By now you have had the first part of the season to evaluate your summer strategies for whatever is going on at home while you are at work. Households with children face some real challenges when school is out (I know ours does), and Im pretty sure you have done your best to make a plan, but is it working? Now is a good time to ask your kids how they feel about the summer so far and get suggestions for solving some of the problems that have come up. Talk to your caregiver and emergency backup and let them know you appreciate all they do.  That stay-at-home neighbor needs to be thanked for being on call, even if you havent had to make the call. And dont forget to thank your kids for acting responsibly even though they should be doing it anyway. Have a family treat night and brainstorm how to deal with little things before they turn into door-slamming fights. Do you have a system in place for conflict resolution at home? Do you need to create a sign that lists expectations and rules while you are at work? Is the person in charge while you are gone abusing their authority? Are consequences clear and consistent? Many kids (and adults) find it easier to discuss problems when theres something to do while you talk. Im thinking ice cream with all the toppings here, but do what works for your family. Theres something about a regular family time that you know will be happening that makes communication develop. Its easy to forget that family life does develop the skills you bring into your career. There are surprising ways family and career overlap  and most of it has to do with the strengths we developed at home.

8 Signs You Need To Get Out of Corporate America

8 Signs You Need To Get Out of Corporate AmericaThere are a lot of perks that come with working in corporate America the pay is usually good, there are usually decent benefits, and sometimes you get to sit in beanbag chairs and get your work-out in during your lunch break. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) But there are also a ton of drawbacks. Here are 7 reasons youre probably bedrngnis well suited to the corporate climate and might consider getting out. You shouldnt necessarily quit and run off to join the circus, but, you know, start looking around for other opportunities.1. Youre not a natural brown noser.Schmoozing is a requisite for the corporate world. Your talent and skills and the work you deliverno matter how top notchis not enough to get ahead. You could be by far the strongest link on the team and still get passed up for promotion in favor of some guy who just knows how to kiss butt. If youre not the type to cultivate this skil l, or you find the whole process abhorrent, maybe corporate is not for you.2. Phonies make you sick.Ever had a conversation with someone in the business world where you can tell theyre not really listening, not really there? Laughing at jokes like a zombie chorus when the jokes arent even funny? Coming out with lines that sound right out of an HR ad? Spewing corporatese left and right with no idea what theyre really trying to communicate? If you cant handle a world of fake smiles and meaningless buzzwords anymore, just remember its not you, its them.3. You yearn to be in charge.Youre not in the drivers seat for your careerthe corporation is. It will look after itself first and foremost its own health, goals, longevity, and profit margin. If you want more control or agency in the way your career moves forward, try smaller businesses or other career avenues.4. Benefits go bye-bye.You used to get great perks and full benefits packages in corporate gigs. But nowadays, more companies are cutting costs by passing those costs on to their employees. Keeping their workers loyal, healthy, and happy is not as much of a priority anymore compared with profit margins and appeasing shareholders. Youre just a cog after alland totally replaceable. If you want to be valued for your loyalty, maybe start looking elsewhere.5. Youre not into being cutthroat.People are leaping over the backstabbed dead bodies of their colleagues to get ahead. And this type of behavior will always be rewarded. If youre a bit too tenderhearted for this, then you should rethink where youre working. Especially considering youre not necessarily being rewarded for your talents.6. Its all about the money. No one cares about you personally in a corporate joband certainly not your partner, your aging parents, or your kids. No one really cares about making a difference or saving the worlddespite what their commercials lead you to believe. What they care about is profit. Thats the bottom line. If youre more alt ruistic, or just a little bit less profit-obsessed, maybe move along.7. The hours are too much to handle. Its one thing putting in ridiculous hours for a job you really love, one thats really doing something for your life and career goals, i.e. doing what you love. Its another thing entirely to be slaving away nights, weekends, after hours, when you know youre not personally valued and the work youre doing isnt making much of a difference in the world.8. Youre too creative.Never mind being too tenderhearted for the vicious Game-of-Thronesy work climates, youre just too darned creative for the structure and the monotony of meetings and memos that comprise the corporate 9-to-5. Maybe you find yourself unable to focus with all the meaningless noise. Maybe youre not productive on the normal daily schedule, and work best from, say, noon to six. Maybe your brain works best in fits of productivity, with plenty of time to roam around and do other tasks in between, to rest your juices. Maybe youd be much better off getting paid a higher amount per hour, and working fewer hours. Maybe you just feel a cubicle is a cage for your brain. Maybe numbers arent your jam. And maybe, just maybe, youre incredibly talented and need a bit of an unorthodox structure in a place that values your particular set of skills. Either way, youre very likely to be stifled in the corporate world.

10 Maternity Leave Hacks I Learned As a Preemie Parent

10 Maternity Leave Hacks I Learned As a Preemie Parent I started working at ManpowerGroup, a global, Fortune 500 staffing company, over five years ago. At the time, I welches in my mid-twenties and looking to climb the corporate ladder. I wasnt concerned with policies or benefits relating tomaternity leave, as I was mostly concerned about what next big project I would be managing or wherbeie the next happy hour was going to be. Then, on April 11th at 130 p.m., my world change. My daughter, Sadie McKenzie Smith, entered the world weighing 1 pound and 11 ounces. Three weeks prior to her premature birth, I was admitted to the hospital with complications. My mind was racing with all sorts of questions Is my baby okay? What will happen to my career? How will I complete graduate school? Am I going to be okay?Id been in the middle of a corporate accounting graduate class and was in pursuit of my Masters of Science in project management at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. I was also the Manager of Shared Services for ManpowerGroup Solutions RPO, managing a multitude of technology projects for our long list of Fortune 500 clients. Being a professional Project Manager, my nature is to organize my life so that there are no surprises, as it helps me prioritize the day and not feel overwhelmed. So, when this unexpected life event happened, I tried to do what I do best organize my mind, so that I could feel in control of something I couldnt control. I organized my game plan as a career-driven preemie parent into 10 actionable buckets1. Know the importance of your corporate relationships, and utilize them.Im sure by now youve either read or know of the book Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. I found that having existing relationships with leadership at ManpowerGroup who already at seats at the table was so helpful in my situation. I was able to reach out to these key stakeholders to explain my life event and create a corporate support system. This support system helped me co mmunicate internally what was happening, as well as determine how I could still help the ManpowerGroup kollektiv and maintain my work calendar in the process.2. Understand your benefits.FMLA, Short Term Disability all of it. Thirty days after birth, you can register your child for healthcare, too. I must have called my insurance every week I was in the hospital to make sure Sadie and I were covered.3. Communicate with your team.I had let my team know early on (about 26 weeks) that my blood pressure was starting to become alarmingly higher day by day with my pregnancy. Some of you might know this is commonly known as preeclampsia. I had let the team know the what ifs to help prepare them in an emergency. I also started to create contact lists for all my projects it was like one huge stakeholder register. This would help my team communicate with vendors if I was there one day and gone the next.Over the next three weeks, Iworked remotelyfrom my hospital bed I just needed my cell phone and good wifi. I attended conference calls, completed emails, project plans, lead client meetings and trainings all between ultrasounds, nurse rotations, blood draws, and getting woken up every two hours for vitals. Working remotely allowed me to continue working without using up short-term disability or vacation time. It allowed me to maintain my normal. It also helped fill my day. Being on bed rest and monitors can be very difficult it was important to keep my mind busy.4. Dont WebMD/Google it.When you get admitted to the hospital with preeclampsia, inter-uterine growth restriction and a bicornuate uterus, your first inclination is to Google everything.Dont do it. Everyones case is different, and you shouldnt scare yourself for no reason. The doctors are going to use all sorts of new terminology to explain what is happening to you and baby. Read The Preemie Primer and educate yourself. 5. Speaking of read the The Preemie Primer. This book is written by OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Gunter , and whats great about it is that you get both the perspective of a doctor and parent (Dr. Gunter had preemie triplets). This book helped me understand the terms all preemie parents need to become familiar with, like Retinal detachment, Isolate and nasal cannula, just to name a few.6. Work with your hospitals social worker. In the state of Wisconsin, babies born with a low birth weight (under 2 pounds) are considered disabled and applicable for Medicare, no matter parental income status. This meant that even though I had insurance through United Health Care, I also had supplemental care (SSI) with Medicare for as long as Sadie was in the hospital. The hospital social worker is your advocate ask them every question you can think of and then some7. Take some me time. The feeling of guilt is so strong when you have a baby in the NICU. You feel guilty for leaving your baby while you go home for the day (I lived over an hour from the NICU Sadie was staying at). I had a know-how of visitin g the NICU every day from 9-2 while on maternity leave. It was important for me to recover and not fall into a depression. Getting my hair cut, nails done, etc. helped me feel normal and provided some happiness in a stressful time.8. Get close with your NICU staff.I cannot stress this enough. These nurses are your advocates they are going to help you and your little one get through this. Ask the nurses questions and press them for information about what is happening or when things might happen. I became great friends with some of the nurses, and we still speak today.9. Save your PTO.Dont waste your vacation days on non-important things. In the first year of your preemies life, you will have developmental clinics and doctor checkups. Youll need to reserve all the PTO you can.10. Ask for help. There were days I wasnt as strong and needed some help dont be afraid to ask for it. I asked my mother to clean out my refrigerator at home since I was basically living at the NICU. I asked my t eam at ManpowerGroup to help with projects I would have normally managed myself. I asked the lactation consultant for help with breastfeeding. (Sadie was too small to latch, so I pumped every two to four hours for three months yes, even at 2am I would wake up to pump.) Some days I just needed to drain the tears, so I would cry and then go for a walk to regroup.Whats life like now?Sadie is 8 months old and thriving, and Im back to work full-time. I work remotely, allowing me to drop Sadie off at daycare each morning without worrying about competing with city traffic in Milwaukee. Every three months, I have to take Sadie to developmental clinics to asses her capabilities for her adjusted age. I have one class left in pursuit of my Masters degree and I get to travel occasionally for work. This life event pushed me to the edge but it made me a stronger leader with mora compassion.Check out our maternity leave checklist for more.

How to Make Employees Feel Appreciated - Spark Hire

How to Make Employees Feel Appreciated - Spark HireIncentives for employees seems to be a big trend these days. Companies dont want to lose their most talented employees, so in order to keep them happy and satisfied, they go to very great lengths to make sure they dont. Just last week Spark nachrichten discussed in an infographic the companies that do the most for their employees. Think full concierge service, on-site laundry, free food, unlimited vacation days and access to a full company gym are just a few to name. These are all great incentives to keep employees happy, but what is it that employees really want? It seems as though the incentives are awesome, and no ones complaining, but at the end of the day employees just really want to know that they are appreciated. So how can companies show their employees they really care and appreciate their work?Showing your employees you appreciate them and the work they do doesnt have to strain the company budget. Of course, a concierge se rvice would be a great thing for every company to have, but lets be real here. On top of that, a company can give you all the perks you would ever desire, but if they dont show you they truly appreciate you, then whats the point? In fact, in an infographic on workplace incentives that employees want, employees placed the importance of feeling appreciated above good wages. On the flip side though, employers felt that what employees wanted most was good wages. Obviously there is a worker-employer disconnect going on here.So if you are an employer, then you had better get to showing some appreciation As stated earlier, genuine appreciation doesnt even have to come from the wallet. Take a look at some of these genuine, simple ways you can show your employees you appreciate them and all of the work they do for you. Its important- perhaps more than you might think.Simple HellosIf you are an employer at a very large company, its unrealistic to assume that you know everyone. However, everyo ne certainly knows who you are and you should realize that. If you run into any of your workers, a simple recognition of their presence can be just enough. When doing research for this article, I cam across a story that really alarmed me. The CEO of a company was in the elevator with an employee of theirs. The employee said hello and the CEO only grunted and looked away. To really stick the knife in the employees stomach, another employee hopped into the elevator and greeted the CEO and got a response. On top of that, they started talking about specifics of family and kids. Now, as I said its clearly unrealistic to assume you know everyone in your company. (Unless of course you work for an awesome start up like Spark Hire.) However, a simply hello and a smile never hurt anyone, now did it? Keep this in mind next time you peruse the office or end up stuck in the elevator with someone you dont know. The employee mentioned in the story above left the company, because quite frankly, who wants to work for such a rude person? A simple hello would have saved this employee.Thank You Notes and LettersYoud be surprised how easy and fast it is to type up a thank you letter to your employees and send it along. Youd also be surprised to learn how good it can make your employees feel. Its a small gesture, but its a small token of your appreciation for their hard work. If you have an employee that is doing stellar work, take the time to write out a letter expressing your thanks and that you noticed all of the hard work they put into your company or project. Receiving a thank you letter from your employer is an awesome confidence booster and you can be sure this employee will continue to work hard seeing as though you noticed their efforts.giftstoff CertificatesOK, so for this one you may have to reach into your wallet a bit, but its not much. If you see that your employees are doing a great job then handing out gift certificates can really show them you care and notice. It d oesnt have to be a huge one and you dont have to give them out to everyone. If you see that one of your employees has been going above and beyond, giving them a $50 or $100 gift certificate to a nice restaurant or a spa is a great way to let them know you value their work and their time. Its a small gesture, but showing that you went out of your way to give something back to them will make them feel great and likely keep the awesome production up.So you see, not all employee appreciation efforts need to equal out to dollar signs. Simple hellos and recognition can go miles.SOURCE YahooIMAGE Courtesy of Inc.
